The Community Food Advisor (CFA) program trains and supports volunteers who provide information and programs promoting healthy eating and food safety to consumers in Huron County. The typical CFA volunteer is someone who loves food and has some knowledge and skills in food handling. They participate in a peer training program which is certified by the Huron County Health Unit.
Community Food Advisors receive training in safe and nutritious food selection, preparation and proper food storage. Upon successful completion of their training, each volunteer becomes a certified Community Food Advisor. Community Food Advisors are recertified annually, based on their completion of community placements and education updates.
Community Food Advisor Activities
They can speak about reading food labels, healthy snacks, preparing meals for one or two people, proper hand washing and food safety with any age group, in most any kind of setting, including community centres, food banks, collective kitchens, schools, or at farmers’ markets.
Community Food Advisors are prepared to:
- Staff information booths or displays at health fairs, farmers’ markets, or shopping centres
- Facilitate workshops on Canada’s Food Guide to Healthy Eating
- Provide presentations on a wide range of topics, such as menu planning, safe food handling, or low fat cooking
- Facilitate community food programs, such as community kitchens
- Conduct a cooking class or food demonstration
There is no cost for a Community Food Advisor to speak to your group; however, we do ask that you pay for any food items that may be needed for the presentation.
