Sustainability is about ensuring the long-term well-being of the planet, people, and economy. Sustainable development meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs.
To the residents of Huron, sustainability means making decisions about lifestyle, thinking differently about habits, and determining our roles as individuals. Sustainability involves becoming more aware, innovative, educated and living better – not living without.
To the communities of Huron, sustainability means being connected, self-sufficient, resourceful and resilient. These qualities will enable communities to cope with change.
Principles of Sustainability:
1. Recognize the interdependence of environmental, economic, and social health;
2. Invoke local responses to broader issues;
3. Emphasize community awareness, education, and involvement; and
4. Requires the responsible and efficient use of both resources and energy
To encourage sustainability in our local communities, the County of Huron’s Planning and Development Department created the Sustainable Huron Take Action Report. It was developed through the participation of more than 1,200 Huron County residents, including 54 community groups.
The Huron-Perth Farm to Table network is dedicated to helping to fulfill the goals identified by the community, particularly the agriculture portion of the report.
