It may have a new name, but the goal of Huron Perth Eat and Learn continues to be making sure all children have access to healthy food in their school. The name was changed from the Huron Perth School Nutrition Partnership in the fall of 2008 to make it easier to recognize.

Eat and Learn offers funding and support to schools that want to have a breakfast, snack, or lunch program. Funding comes from various sources. The program works with parents and school staff to get needed funding, and helps schools plan their activities.

Eat and Learn programs provide nutritious food with at least one serving of fruits or vegetables. Students take part in Eat and Learn programs for many reasons. They may have early morning sports and don’t make it back home to eat. Parents may have to leave for work early and cannot always supervise breakfast routines. Early bus schedules get students to school well before class time. And some households simply do not have enough food.

Eat and Learn programs are open to all students. Those families who can afford it are asked for a small contribution.

“Well-nourished children and adolescents are more likely to be better prepared to learn, be active, and maintain their health as adults.”

Volunteer & Contact:

Huron Perth Eat and Learn depends on the community and volunteers. The people who prepare and serve meals to students are often parents/caregivers, teachers, principals and other school staff who are not paid for their work. Their commitment, dedication, and support are so important to the success of the programs.

If you are interested in starting or helping at an Eat and Learn program at your school, contact the Ontario Student Nutrition Program for a representative in your area.
